Was 2007 Colder?

Jeff Jacoby had an interesting column in the Boston Globe. He noted that 2007 was supposed to be the hottest ever. Oops...
  • It got really cold in South America with record cold in Brazil, the first snow in 89 years in Buenos Aires, the toughest winter in 50 years in Chile, and a state of emergency due to the cold in Peru.
  • Australia recorded its coldest June ever.
  • New Zealand recorded record lows in the spring.
  • It snowed in Johannesburg, South Africa (first big snowfall in 25 years).

It was cold in the north too...

  • New Hampshire recorded record snowfalls.
  • The Canadian government is predicting the coldest winter in 15 years.

So what happened to the temperature in 2007? Overall, it's the same as 2006, which is the same as 2005, which is the same as 2004, which is the same as 2003, which is the same as 2002, which is the same as 2001. And yet, CO2 keeps going up.

What gives? Could it be that solar activity has more to do with global temperature than your SUV? Could it be that global warming stopped and global cooling set in?

Over 600 Things Caused By Global Warming

John Brignell is a Brit with a PhD from the University of London. He's an electrical engineer who has done research, design work, consulting, and teaching.

He's become an expert in the art of using statistics to mislead, especially when done by politicians and the media. Dr Brignell's authored two books on the subject and gives lectures for companies like Lloyds of London on the misuse and abuse of statistics.

He also maintains a neat little website called Numbers Watch. He describes it as, "devoted to the monitoring of the misleading numbers that rain down on us via the media. Whether they are generated by Single Issue Fanatics (SIFs), politicians, bureaucrats, quasi-scientists (junk, pseudo- or just bad), such numbers swamp the media, generating unnecessary alarm and panic. They are seized upon by media, hungry for eye-catching stories. There is a growing band of people whose livelihoods depend on creating and maintaining panic. There are also some who are trying to keep numbers away from your notice and others who hope that you will not make comparisons. Their stock in trade is the gratuitous lie. The aim here is to nail just a few of them."

I found one page fascinating. It's a list of some 600+ problems attributed to global warming. All are hyperlinked. It helps illustrate the utter ridiculous nature of global warming hysteria. Check it out...

Polar Bear Population Boom

According to new research, the numbers of the giant predator have grown by between 15 and 25 per cent over the last decade.

Some authorities on Arctic wildlife even claim that hunting, and not global arming, has been the real cause of the decrease in polar bear numbers in areas where the species is in decline.

A leading Canadian authority on polar bears, Mitch Taylor, said: "We’re seeing an increase in bears that’s really unprecedented, and in places where we’re seeing a decrease in the population it’s from hunting, not from climate change."

Mr Taylor estimates that during the past decade, the Canadian polar bear population has increased by 25 per cent - from 12,000 to 15,000 bears.

Polar Bears Can Swim For More Than 60 Miles?

Who'd a thunk it. According to Sea World...

Polar bears are strong swimmers; they swim across bays or wide leads without hesitation. They can swim for several hours at a time over long distances. They've been tracked swimming continuously for 100 km (62 mi.)
But Al Gore's cheesy animation shows them drowning. Could it be another fib? So it ain't so Al!

A Skeptics Guide To An Inconvenient Truth

Marlo Lewis from the Competitive Enterprise Institute made a careful analysis of Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth. He calls bull where needed (and it's often needed). If you've seen the movie, have friends who've seen the movie, or have kids who were forced to watch it in school, this is a good read.

I especially like the way Lewis points out the true moral issue. The following is from the conclusion...
An Inconvenient Truth, Vice President Al Gore’s book on "The planetary emergency of global warming and what can be done about it," purports to be a non-ideological exposition of climate science and common sense morality. As this commentary shows, AIT is a colorfully illustrated lawyer’s brief that uses science selectively and often dubiously to advance an agenda of alarm and energy rationing.

Gore calls global warming a "moral issue," but for him it is a moralizing issue—a license to castigate political adversaries and blame America first for everything from hurricanes to floods to wildfires to tick-borne disease. Somehow he sees nothing immoral in the attempt to make fossil energy scarcer and more costly in a world where 1.6 billion people have never flipped a light switch and billions more are too poor to own a car.

Nearly every significant statement that Vice President Gore makes regarding climate science and climate policy is either one sided, misleading, exaggerated, speculative, or wrong. In light of these numerous distortions, AIT is ill-suited to serve as a guide to climate science and climate policy for the American people.

Sanity From The NY Times?

Wow. NY Times columnist, John Tierney predicts dire weather for 2008. He's not sure where or when or what, only that wherever, whenever, and whatever dire weather occurs will be pounced upon by global warming alarmists and proof of antropogenic global warming.

Tierney goes on to report that, "A year ago, British meteorologists made headlines predicting that the buildup of greenhouse gases would help make 2007 the hottest year on record. At year’s end, even though the British scientists reported the global temperature average was not a new record — it was actually lower than any year since 2001 — the BBC confidently proclaimed, '2007 Data Confirms Warming Trend.'”

He notes that all of the hand wringing over Arctic ice loss is matched by silence about record Antarctic ice gains. He recalls the predictions of hurricane devastation have not panned out the past two hurricane season, with 2007's season the calmest in decades.

Tierney points out other "inconvenient truths" for climate alarmists, whom he describes as "availability entrepreneurs," who are "the activists, journalists and publicity-savvy scientists who selectively monitor the globe looking for newsworthy evidence of a new form of sinfulness, burning fossil fuels."

Since a slight, gradual warming, doesn't invoke panic, the availability entrepreneurs induce it by creating an "availability cascade" of dire news. "The availability cascade is a self-perpetuating process," writes Tierney, "The more attention a danger gets, the more worried people become, leading to more news coverage and more fear."

This is good stuff. That it's appearing in the NY Times is an indication that more people are noticing Emperor Al has no clothes.

Banned In Boston

Actually, this is banned just about everywhere. Well, if not banned, it's certainly not available for viewing. Fortunately the Internet makes censorship much harder (I bet Al Gore's sorry he invented the Internet now).

Check out The Great Global Warming Swindle from UK Channel 4. This is over an hour long, so get your popcorn. Also, share it with your kids (especially if they've been force fed Gore's factually inaccurate proganda piece in school).

Of course, do can't expect a "denier" to produce something like this without a fair share of abuse. Hear what the producer of the GGWS had to say to CNN's Glenn Beck.

Those Darn Martian SUVs!

Did you know global warming is occuring on Mars? Yes, Mars.

London's Sunday Times reported that...

Mars is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, writes Jonathan Leake.

Scientists from Nasa say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period.

Darn it. We send one friggin' little SUV to Mars and look what happens. After all, Mars couldn't be warming due to something like the sun (hello!) because that might mean Earth's warming is due to something like the sun.
